Opportunity and me

14 05 2006

I could have an opportunity to advance my career. If I went after this opportunity, in my organisation, it really wouldn’t matter too much if I didn’t get it. One of the attributes for the role is confidence. That includes the confidence to go after your goals, even if you don’t have everything required. You just need belief in yourself and a willingness to learn.

It’s a well known fact that when men go after an opportunity they are less worried about whether they have every single attribute and they focus on their strengths and go for it. With women, I find it tends to be a case of focusing on all the things that are missing rather than what they can contribute.  And if they feel that they don’t have every attribute that’s required, then they go no further, waiting for something where they can tick off every attribute. It’s very easy to fall into that trap, but it’s limiting and that can hold me back.  So I’ve always made an effort to focus on the value I bring, how I can make a difference and how willing I am to learn what’s needed to get the job done and make a difference. Having moved up a very steep learning curve over the past year in my present role, I can prove I have what it takes. So, I’ve decided that this expression of interest is just that, to demonstrate that I want to advance, and that I am willing to do what’s necessary to succeed. I am enjoying my present role and it would be hard to leave it. But that’s possibly the best position to be in when looking to advance.
