I Have Seen The Skinny…

17 10 2006

The Skinny Jean that is. And, I have to say that on the right person they look pretty darn good. On the right person. With the right shape.

And what does this shape look like?

Errm… well. Super slim. But you aren’t surprised at that at all are you? Not at all. I’ve spotted a few people wearing them and, just as I said in my previous article the skinny jean has to be the most unforgiving pair of jeans ever. Except for their 80’s predecessors.

The women I saw wearing them were very slim and I have to admit pulled off the look extremely well. But if you have less-than-slim thighs (or any thighs) big calves (or any calves) and/or any bulges in places you’d rather not draw attention to, forget it. Stick to straights. Suggestions that you wear baggy tops or voluminous batwing tunics to camouflage any shortcomings (should you be a little more generously proportioned than you would like, but still want to wear the style) are stupid. In my opinion, these jeans are made to be seen, not covered up. And it’s hard not to notice them.

If you can’t pull off the complete look with style and panache ( hint - the super slim body shape is a great start) the skinny looks rather dreadful. Like you’re trying to be “in” only you just missed. By a teensy weensy bit. But you still missed. Bad move. You’re very likely to appear larger from waist down in manner of back of a baby elephant or back of a bus… don’t say I didn’t warn you! Take heart though – at least everyone will know that well, you know what’s “in fashion.”

So how are the skinny jeans being worn? Tops – I’ve seen various – as mentioned I personally don’t think baggy looks that cool. As far as shoes are concerned they look great with ballet flats. And tucked into ankle or “scrunchy” calf-length boots looks pretty cool. I’ve seen some wearing them with platform stillettos – to me that only makes them look tarty. But hey, she was slim and very tall (I’m talking around 5’9) with legs that seemed to go on forever. I thought she might have been going for a “retro” look. I’ve also seen some worn with knee high boots, personally I don’t think this looks as good, because you can’t see the skinny, (sometimes concertina) bit, which is from the knee down. Footwear matters more with these jeans.

The SkinnyJean is still the 80’s drainpipe recycled. And Kate Moss still has much to answer for (allegedly) bringing back an item that only “clones of Katie” can wear. The majority of bigger girls will be disappointed. The rich skinny, waiflike slim girls who want to wear The Skinny – are laughing.

I’ll be on the look-out for more sightings.

I still can’t work out how they get them on though…
