Is There Life For Jade After Big Brother?

20 01 2007

Who gives a shit about this whole sorry episode? Apparently many. Roughly 9 million people to be exact.

After trying studiously to avoid the whole Celebrity Big Brother storm, aka the Goody/Shetty race row, because far more informed folk have been avidly writing and blogging about it, I give up. After all every time I go to check my news sites, there it is. Again. Right in my face and gathering momentum as Jade Goody gets voted off. Better believe it, this is National News. After all didn’t the PM have a view? And even the Mayor of London chimed in – worried that the image of Britain across India garnered from Big Brother might damage jobs. Oh, please!

In general, I detest reality shows, and refuse to watch them – with a couple of exceptions – The Apprentice (the first US series), which I was cajoled into watching and actually enjoyed, America’s Next Top Model and Britain’s Next Top Model. I know how compulsive reality shows are but I refused to get drawn into either Big Brother or Survivor. Ugh! So it completely boggles my mind to see just how many people – 9,000,000 – wrote in to complain about the race row.

Not that it is a bad thing to complain.

But do that many people really watch this irrelevant reality show? 9 MILLION??? That’s insane. Even crazier is that this has been front page – and – dare I say it – international news for the past week or so. WTF?

But I forgot – the whole attraction of reality shows is about degradation. Specifically and most importantly, peeking in on other people’s degradation. Maybe that’s what’s so compulsive about them. Anyway, way to go for Channel Four and the ratings. A tired show suddenly gets a shot in the arm.

And as for the tabloids, well they’re in the gutter as usual.

I haven’t even heard of this episode. Reality TV makes me cry. Well, Survivor does. Because it’s so bad. My reality TV pick is Project Runway, because at least they actually have some kind of talent… you know, besides the ability to piss off your fellow contestants.

I agree. If I believed in Hell, I would wish for a specific area designated for the creators of reality TV where they would be forced to watch re-runs of this inanity for all eternity.

As you say, it’s so difficult to escape it, even more so living in the UK. It’s making main headline news (not just the “and finally” humourous bit).

More mind boggling is this fantastic piece of rhetoric from Jade upon her eviction (release?):
“I’m disgusted in myself for saying what I have just seen myself saying. I do not approve of any of my actions and I do not approve of the words that came out of my mouth.”

I can’t even find the words to respond to that …

i hate big brother tv show, it is a moronic waste of time, the viewing figures pre jade rant was something like 3.5 million, but once the press found it.. 9 million viewers..

jade goody is a moron, a dyed in the wool idiot. she is only famous for being famous. the only reality tv show i want to see is cannibal island, you get all these 3rd rate people dump them there, and they have no food, and so have to eat each other..

i have never seen the interest in reality tv shows. i have enough trouble with my reality, i want to forget the real and go to the fantasy..

gordon brown who was in india to talk about finance, has been asked all about big brother. big brother has not changed the world in any significant way (well maybe dumbening down people who watch it)

@Joy - Lucky, lucky, you if you haven’t heard of the episode ;-) BB was bad when it started years back and Celebrity BB is equally awful.
@ Rhea - how about a reality show about where we send the low-life reality tv show creators like mercuriors cannibal island lol… incredible that this 3rd rate show with 3rd rate B, C and D people can be making headline news. With all the other real problems we have in the world today… as for Jade Goody’s words - just proves how stupid she is.
@mercurior - really like your idea of cannibal island ;-) I just cringe to think of the level of dumbness that people who watch this show have sunk to… I mean they actually enjoy it!

The thing that worries me even more about this sorry story is the fact that there have been riots in India over it, yet Big Brother is not on in India. It’s the media stirring things up.

Again, I personally don’t think what Jade said was racist. She’s think, naive and ignorant but not racist. I believe Danielle is the true rascist one, but no one has seemed to pick up on it.

Although I have no idea what this whole BB debacle is about, what strikes me is the number of people who wrote in to complain.

Can you imagine the change for good that could happen if those same people were that fired up to write letters supporting a REAL cause? I wonder if those same people even bother to watch real news?

Rhea (15:52:23) :

In answer to Carisa … probably not.

I used to work with reality tv freaks fans. They could discuss these non-celebs for hours, indepth analysis would take place on the rivalries and alliances. And yet, when others around the office raised real-world topics of conversation (global warming, war, famine … you know, those trivialities of life) there were blank stares in return.

I also asked three such colleagues whether they’d voted in the last general election (which costs nothing) to which they replied no. I then asked them whether they had voted in the BB evictions and they said they had on a number of occassions (for which you are charged).

If they are indicative of the rest of the BB fan-club, … words fail me.

might as well combine the 2, the political bb house, that way we can see what a bunch of tossers they really are.. ;-)

The comments Jade made, whether out of ignorance or not were racist. Ignorance is just the excuse behind the action.

Reality TV is the worst thing to happen to one of the greatest inventions of our time. All reality viewing should be restricted to the web in my view. Television should be for quality productions only.

actually they are saying she was coached, and it brought in more viewers, because BB was in a slump.
