Top Fashion Trends For This Season

by Britgirl on March 19, 2007

The future, as far as this season’s fashion trends are concerned is bold and bright. And frilly, and flouncy, and metallic.

There are skinny jeans and minis, swingy dresses and lots of leg. Looks like we can actually pick what suits and mix, match and create our very own looks.

So here are some tips garnered from some of my favourite fashion pages.

Bright

If you’re going bright, hang on before you go completely gung-ho. The wrong shape and you could end up looking like a brightly coloured laundry bag. Not a good look. Bright colours can make you look even larger, so anything that says blowsy volume or has flounces or frills should probably be avoided in favour of simple slim lines. It does depend on what it is though and all the models are tall and skinny, so everything looks gorgeous. Real women, as we know don’t look like the cat-walk girls. But some can carry anything off like a breeze.

Bright mini-skirts and mini-dresses are going to be hot, and though I’m not a fan of the fluorescent look, a bright orange jacket might be an interesting addition. Or a bright coloured belt. I already have my bright coloured bag – which I plan to use with everything. By the way, this season, bags are super-size. Which for a gal like me is perfect. I never did understand those tiny “purse-bags”.

Folksy

I’m not too sure anything in the folksy range is going to catch my fancy… patchwork dresses, waist cinched leather belted mini-dresses and flounced hemmed dresses. Um, I think I’ll pass. I’ve never been one for the folksy look anyway and I never lived in a horse-drawn gypsy caravan. Not nostalgic for it either. No, maybe a sleeveless smock might do, but I’ve found they have an unnerving way of making people look pregnant… shoes for this look are the clunky platforms (yes, they are still with us) and bags are fringed suede. Definitely the hippie look. Watch out for fashionistas going the whole hog with a 60’s bandanna… shudder. Next!

Sporty!

This will be a functional look, for those of us – like me – who, while loving glamour dislike an over abundance of frilly and flouncy stuff. For some strange reason the frills have been with us for quite a few seasons now. But at least there are options. Watch out for the gym coming to the street, with hoodies, trackpants, leggings and bra-tops being mixed with more sophisticated pieces. Just great for running for the bus… or the streetcar! I like the thought of practicality that evokes and since I’m an urban girl, well who knows? I’m all for practical.

I still can’t see myself in leggings teamed with dresses or coat yet, regardless of whether said leggings cost as much as a pair of designer jeans. But I also said I didn’t like the skinny jean either… and they’re my second most worn pair of jeans right now. I do like the thought of clean-cut dresses. Pairing with leggings though would be a stretch for me though – sorry, no pun intended. The leggings look still look as naff to me as they did when this look was first touted. Maybe I’m seeing the wrong people wearing them.

Romantic

Girls, this is where we find our feminine side. Pretty pastels and frothy feminine frills is where it’s at. But there is bold froth too. II said earlier I don’t much care for frills, however I shall be on the look out for some alternatives – faded floral prints, and lace inspired camisole dresses, gowns and tops. Think Spring! Summer! Romance! I’ve seen some smashing dresses and jackets looking at online fashion collections, but what’s important are the high street versions. You know, the affordable, wearable versions.

Metallic

Shine on – there is no reason not to. I am fervently hoping that people do this right, because the metallic look has the potential to go very wrong. The metal mini-dress look will not work for everyone, I can see many rushing for their metallic mini-skirt to get the latest look. Hang on! Got the legs? Can you carry it off? There are options.

Watching some of the catwalk shows, it seems that designers went a little mad with the shiny stuff. Tip: if you want to do this trend the best way to do it is probably with accessories… shoes, bags, chunky jewelry, belts. You get the idea. I like the thought of metallic accessories teamed with white myself…perfect.

Of course that little gold or sliver dress is still a winner for evening wear.

Confidence is the key. We have buckets of it!

I am going for the natural look this summer, I shall exfoliate, perhaps wear a tattoo or three, and of course see through jeans. Should look good with my Italian wet look hair.

I think a mix of the folksy and romantic would look good.

I love fashion but when summer comes I’m usually at a loss as my wardrobe tends to be mostly black, brown, navy and beige. I’m a winter and fall person. I do accessorize with colour but I don’t often wear a lot of vibrant clothes. I’m not one for the folksy look either. And while I did purchase leggings this season, I can’t bring myself to wear them…I get Flashdance flashbacks.

I do have three pairs of skinny jeans which I rather like despite the fact I’m neither tall nor skinny.

I’m very into metallic accessories but not clothing.

I’m looking forward to the shoes of spring myself!

I love shoes, belts and bags more than anything else.

Ooh, I’m in for the mini skirts. I collect those like Imelda once did shoes.

I don’t care what’s in style. I only care if it affects whether I can find summat I like. When that nasty boho look was hot, and everything was in ugly shades of beige and brown, and looked like baglady clothes, I couldn’t find anything i liked. Even the jewellery was mostly hideous.

Flashdance, cool!!! I adore the 80s, and wear 80s clothes if I feel like it. I don’t care what ppl think, and don’t follow all these boring fashion rules women are slaves to. What is sooooooooooooooo hot now, will look stupid, according to fashionistas, in 5 years. So, who cares, I wear what I want, when I want.

Also, so many of today’s styles seem made only for the super-thin size 00s out there. Blah, who needs it.

RE – I could never understand the brown boho look myself. I think that was one of the seasons I hardly bought anything, because it was so unappealing. Yuck. Have to say I dislike 80’s fashion and can’t understand why designers felt we needed to have it back… I have unbent towards the skinny jean though – and that surprised even me, because I hated them when they first came out :) And yes, even with all the talk of the “unhealthy models” they are just as skinny as ever.

AM – Shoes?? Did someone say SHOES??! Honestly, don’t get me started on shoes…Like Christine I love shoes and bags… and as far as I’m concerned a woman can never have enough of either… ;) I now have to cull brutally to find room for any new acquisitions. Or refrain from buying. It’s gonna be tough as I’ve seen some goodies for spring already!

Christine – One reason I buy my fashion mags – apart from the drool factor and the fact l love clothes – is that I get heaps of ideas for how to “summerize” my wardrobe – with more affordable versions of what I like of course. I’ve found I can usually do this with a couple of pieces, but I do tend to go for classic stuff that’s easy to team up. I’ll only buy stuff if I like it

Work is corporate so I wear suits, so in summer it’s away with the dark and on with the lighter colours – apart from the basic black/brown suits of course which I can lighten up with tops and now we have the “long shorts” suit which I love. (Actually, they’re pedal pushers, hows that for 80’s fashion?)

And outside work I almost totally live in jeans…but the leggings… I just cannot bring myself to even buy them let alone wear them outdoors ;)

Jannette – Folksy and romantic…. well one thing that seems to be true is that you can mix and match.

Dave – guess you’re going to post your trendy look on your blog then ;-)

I like softer colors, but my jeans are essential! I love your ideas for a “romantic.” Light colors work so great during the summer!
