Men, Vasectomies And The Childfree Choice

30 04 2007

Much of the information on sterilization has been overwhelmingly centred on women. And even that information isn’t an awful lot.  Not much is heard of, or written about, men who either hope to be sterilized or who have been. I am always keen to hear more about men and their choice to be childfree.

I came across this very informative and well written article. Called Is It Hip To Snip?  it’s a bit of a long read, however very well worth reading to the end. I thought I’d highlight here some of the article’s key points that stood out to me.

More and more men are making the decision to be childfree and when they do, many want to get a vasectomy as soon as they can.

They also get told by doctors that they are too young, or that they will change their minds. We know that women face this roadblock all the time.

When Good Actors Do Bad Things

28 04 2007

My question initially on this whole  sorry saga was, why is this even news? Because Alec Baldwin shouted at his daughter?

Well, because he called her a little pig. Oh please. Who cares?

On a childfree forum I frequent where it was suggested that Alec Baldwin is a horrible parent (and, in not so many words not fit to be on the planet) I suggested that we perhaps shouldn’t be quite so swift to stand in judgement when we really don’t know the whole story. I’m not saying he was right, and of course he should be contrite – but I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes as a parent, as it seems ex-wife is doing her best to ensure daughter knows that father is a Very Bad Man un-deserving of access to his only child. And while he was thoughtless and perhaps not very wise in letting his anger and frustration get the better of him, he’s human. His ex-wife, in leaking that voicemail was mean and spiteful.

Childfree? Imagine Having Dinner In This Restaurant…

25 04 2007

Actually you really don’t have to be childfree to appreciate this. You could, in fact be a parent who doesn’t think hysterical screaming kids in a restaurant is particularly funny or even cool. You might be someone who has consideration for their fellow diners and exits with hysterical toddler(s) if unable to calm them. Just so others don’t have to suffer, you know? You might even be a parent who got a baby-sitter and was dining out.

A friend sent me the link to this article and for a minute I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I read it all and then the comments. You have to read the comments.

I read it again, thinking I’d missed something, but no. I still failed to see the humour.

Apparently the parent did have some initial thought for those who were trying to enjoy their meal, however this was obviously short-lived:

“As I attempted to place her in her highchair, all toddler hellfire broke loose. Read the rest of this entry »

She’s 13 - And She’s The New World Text Messaging Champ

23 04 2007

I know some pretty fast text messaging people but this girl is faster than all of them put together.

K, so i ws gng 2wrt the hdln as txt bt thgt it mgt nt b 2 ez 2 rd. I like texting, but I have to say I dislike it when people use the language of texting in general email or on blogs. Text is text, everything else should be properly written English. No excuses.

But hats off to Morgan Pozgar who certainly deserves the title, having beating 250 competitors from across America. But does she ever find time for… other things? Like school? She trained by sending an average of 8,000 text messages a month to her friends – that’s about 260 a day. Still, she beat a 23 year old engineer and I say she deserves every bit of her $25,000 prize money. Read the rest of this entry »

22 04 2007

That HIV/AIDS is a plague that is ravaging the African continent should be the biggest story in the world. Fellow human beings are dying not by the tens or the thousands, but by the millions. Whole families, entire generations. Yet it barely even makes the front page of the media.

33 teenagers were killed in a senseless shooting last week. A totally murderous tragedy. Everyone is shocked at such a loss of life. But people are dying EVERY DAY from HIV/AIDS – millions. There is no such shock and little interest. Considering that the disease is wrecking countries on the African continent. On the human tragedy scale, I’d say it ranks pretty high. But (with a few notable exceptions) it barely makes the news these days and where it does it is a struggle to keep it there. How can that be? AIDS is preventable in the West. Why aren’t we ensuring antiretroviral drugs get to these sufferers?

Journalist Stephanie Nolan’s book 28 - Stories of Aids in Africa has just been published and caught my attention today. This is a part excerpt from the Globe and Mail: Read the rest of this entry »

Q&A: US Campus Killings - Did You Know?

21 04 2007

I found this very interesting article on the BBC News website. The aftermath of the recent (and senseless) killings at Virginia Tech has generated, yet again, a heated debate about guns and gun ownership in the US.

Everybody has a view. On one hand, some think there are no gun controls at all (actually there are some) and many  feel there are simply too many guns in circulation in the US. There are also, rather chillingly, those who feel that far from being too many guns, there aren’t nearly enough.

Like Larry Pratt:

“All the school shootings that have ended abruptly in the last 10 years were stopped because a law-abiding citizen - a potential victim - had a gun,” said Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America. “The latest school shooting at Virginia Tech demands an immediate end to the gun-free zone law which leaves the nation’s schools at the mercy of madmen.”

More guns. That’ll stop the shootings. Right.

The article does address some interesting facts. Check it out and see what you think.

When A Dog Eats Its Own Vomit Why Are We Surprised?

20 04 2007

Tits, blood and tragedy sells.

I call it the Sun Factor (or American Idol, or Canadian Idol or Pop Idol – it’s all the same thing). Be it the Sun in the UK, any Sun in Canada, or the New York Post in the US - tits, blood and tragedy invariably sell more newspapers and gets more viewers than anything else. And it never, ever fails. It can’t fail. Why? Because people are sensation junkies. And the more they have the more they want. Read the rest of this entry »

Did Someone Else Not Like Mondays?

17 04 2007

Another shooting. Another tragedy. Another shocking, grief filled day. Another shooter goes on the rampage just shooting school kids, but apparently with purpose. Is it me or is there a sense of deja vu here? Haven’t we been here before? Recently?

The chorus of the song “I Don’t Like Mondays” based on killer Brenda Spencer, 17 (who, with a shrug, back in 1979, gave it as her reason for turning a gun on her classmates at her San Diego school) has been going round and round in my head since I heard of today’s shooting, the largest body count in a US school shooting to date.

We’ll never really know why of course, since the shooter also popped himself.

But unfortunately we can now almost predict how events will unfold from here: Read the rest of this entry »

Google “Accidentally” Disables Gmail Accounts

16 04 2007

Google is always in the news these days. More often than not because it’s taking over buying a new company, or it’s pretending to be Microsoft or its shares have entered the stratosphere. Again.

But it seems to Google no news means good news. Because the little fact that several Gmail users had had their Gmail accounts disabled, was mysteriously absent. From anywhere. Even a Google search was hard put to bring up anything. Google hadn’t put out notices about the snafu, even though many users were screaming with frustration, many having been unceremoniously booted off their accounts and their blogs (since the new Blogger now forces you to log in with your Google username and password) with no clue as to why.
