A Childfree Open Letter… From Heartless Bitches International
22 08 2007I can’t quite remember where I came across An open letter to virulent breeders but that matters not. Probably in one of my Childfree alerts. It gave me such a great laugh that I of course tagged it to share it again with everyone at a later date. I love it. Every time I read it I want to savour it… and read it again. And I still get a kick out of reading it. It pretty much speaks for itself so doesn’t really need much introduction from me at all.
Given the number of breeder trolls who mysteriously are drawn to Like It Is – a childfree blog - as if by a magnet; and who feel they simply must inform us about how they want to breed more kids and how crazy they think we are – this is the perfect open letter to them. I think I should make it a permanent link.
Not that we like to feed the trolls (who without exception are clearly not the sharpest knives in the box otherwise they wouldn’t be spending time reading and commenting here – or not bothering to read but just commenting) but how nice to have a “recommended post” for them!
I am already finding it rather hard to decide which is my favourite part of An open letter to virulent breeders. I think the letter is a gem from beginning to end and deserves to be widely shared. After endless thought (OK not quite endless, but a lot) I chose this paragraph as my favourite. Especially the cats bit:
“You have chosen to be a parent, and that’s your business and your life choice. I have chosen not to be a parent, and that’s my business and my life choice. Why the hell do so many of you feel the need to attack me with such a malevolent torrent of abuse for this? You hiss at me, through a face contorted by anger, that I am “not a real woman if you don’t want children”, that I am “doomed to a life of regretful yearning”, and I will definitely become “a shriveled, twisted and vicious old woman driven by resentment and bitterness.” (There is also usually mention of cats. Not sure where the cats come into it - some sort of bizarre contraceptive process?) Er, excuse me? “Resentment”? “Bitterness”? So, not like what you, in your blissful maternity, are pouring over me?”
I also love the last paragraph, which I will leave you to read for yourself.

repeatedly, and with malicious forethought LOL
Trolls are like natures pressure relief. They storm into a “safe” space and spew their unintelligible bile, and then folks like me get to rip them a virtual new one, allowing me to get through the rest of my day without ripping an actual person’s head off.

Thanks for sharing this letter… I love it and am trying to figure out one to write of my own that aligns with the bashing I get that is more, er, passive aggressive and those delivering don’t even recognize how vengeful they are.

To me, this sentence typifies the very essence of what I believe is the reason for breeders’ (not parents) extreme reactions. It’s sad that they seem to think that expressing any kind of disappointment or fatigue with being a parent is somehow disloyal and so instead of rightly expressing their actual feelings, they suppress it and express it as rage at us.
There is an idea that we are mirrors to each other, that what we express to others is what we see in ourselves. For breeders expressing this hostility, I think it is very true. I believe the hostility they express to us is what they really feel for themselves on a level so deep they can’t admit it.
I thought you’d enjoy it. Each time I read it I like it more.

I think that’s very true. And what a pity, because they’d feel so much better if they weren’t so hostile and raging at us.
