“Madam” Threatens To Name And Shame

1 05 2007

There are going to be some particularly nervous people in Washington in the coming weeks. Having kittens might be a tame description. Slow death might be closer. Or how about “best served cold” as in revenge. Or as in subpoena.

Deborah Jean Palfrey threatens to name and shame Washington’s elite

It’s one thing to have the police checking up and calling you in the middle of work, or worse, in the middle of dinner – to ask you if you’ve been a naughty boy. It’s quite another if a news/media network calls you up to ask if er… you have been a client of a certain “Madam”. But that looks like what’s shaping up in Washington, as the Deborah Jean Palfrey show gets on the road, leaving certain mayhem in its wake.

Tsk, tsk. Scandal, hypocrisy, comeuppance, sex and power. Not necessarily in that order.

Did Someone Else Not Like Mondays?

17 04 2007

Another shooting. Another tragedy. Another shocking, grief filled day. Another shooter goes on the rampage just shooting school kids, but apparently with purpose. Is it me or is there a sense of deja vu here? Haven’t we been here before? Recently?

The chorus of the song “I Don’t Like Mondays” based on killer Brenda Spencer, 17 (who, with a shrug, back in 1979, gave it as her reason for turning a gun on her classmates at her San Diego school) has been going round and round in my head since I heard of today’s shooting, the largest body count in a US school shooting to date.

We’ll never really know why of course, since the shooter also popped himself.

But unfortunately we can now almost predict how events will unfold from here: Read the rest of this entry »

Obama Launches Presidential Bid

11 02 2007

It’s official. The Democratic Senator Barack Obama has launched his presidential campaign. He is 45 and considered the first African-American candidate to have a chance of winning the Democratic nomination.

Hillary Clinton has also thrown her hat in the ring. So it’s Barak against Hillary so far. Should be interesting. The news media is buzzing about it.

Here’s my take and I’m perfectly willing to be proved wrong.

If the Democrats are running either Barack or Hillary or they might as well just forget about winning the presidency. Both are unelectable, at least for the moment, for different reasons.

Hillary is a woman. A hated woman, by America at least. Especially by women. And she’s an intellectual. Bad. Very bad. Barack is Black (although, according to the African-American community, because he didn’t grow up descended from slaves and grow up in Alabama, he’s not really black. WTF?!) Or, more importantly he’s “Not Black Enough for African-Americans” (translation: we’re taking our vote and we’re going home). I saw an interview on the Daily Show the other day where a prominent African-American woman was actually saying Barack is “an adopted brother, but not a real brother…” and I could not believe my ears. I eventually managed to pick my jaw off the floor. Read the rest of this entry »

Beckham Signs Mega Deal with LA Galaxy

13 01 2007

Beckham says his move to the US has nothing to do with money or celebrity. I’m inclined to believe him. David Beckham doesn’t need the money. I doubt he could spend all the money he gets in royalties alone in his life-time I hope he got some of that $250 million up front because I doubt he’s going to see most of it.

Galaxy owners defend Beckham move

So what is it all about? Huzza (that’s my husband) suggested a couple of things and it clicked.

Remember the summer? During the World Cup? Who did Becks hang out with during the World Cup? None other than TomKat. (aka Tom and Katie Holmes). Read the rest of this entry »

First Female Speaker Grasps The Gavel - CNN.com

4 01 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) — The spotlight belonged to Nancy Pelosi on Thursday as she became the first woman in U.S. history to stand at the head of the House of Representatives, second in line to the presidency.

Yes, it’s indeed great. Wonderful in fact, that another woman has risen to prominence. Last year we had Katie Kouric. Long overdue and sad it is so rare that it still makes headlines. It should also remind us of how sexist male dominated America still is in its echelons of power, whether this be government or corporate business. When you consider that female voters account for a large number of political votes, this continues to sit oddly when it comes to politics.

We are in 2007 and only now a woman gets to head the House of Representatives? No doubt the feminists have much to say on that one… and Read the rest of this entry »

Know Your K-Fed

9 11 2006

Well, well. Who’d have thunk it?

Britney’s wanna-be-a-pop-star-but-don’t-know-how husband Kevin Federline – also generously described as an “aspiring wrapper rapper” – is seeking sole custody of the two children AND a slice of her multi-million dollar fortune. Hmmm. Maybe he’s not as dumb as he seems after all. Her fortune in 2004 was estimated by Forbes at around $120 million. Dare we suggest the words “Gold” and “Digger” might be an appropriate description for Fed-Ex?

He did after all leave one heavily pregnant partner for Britney. Three guesses as to what she must be thinking on hearing the news that he, like she was, is now history.

Hey ho. I say that Britney owes her mother a cool couple of $$million at least for making her get an “iron-clad” pre-nuptial agreement. It looks as if Mr Fed-Ex is going to have quite the fight on his hands. Especially since, though she also isn’t particularly smart, Britney is smart enough to ditch the extra baggage now.

Perhaps K-Fed or Fed-Ex should give Lady Mills-McCartney a call for some advice as to what dirt he can sling around in the press to help his case. He’s going to need all the help he can get.

Judging by his singing ability (none) and record sales to date (lousy to none), he should probably quit while he’s ahead.

“If You Had It To Do Over Again – Would You Have Children?”

19 10 2006

This was the question Ann Landers asked in her famous survey. With shocking results.

In one of my recent articles I quoted the Ann Landers survey. You may or may not be aware that Ann Landers (you can do a search on her) was a popular advice columnist who wrote a regular column in the 1970’s. She wrote it for over 20 years, however one of her most famous articles was the one where she published the results of the question above. At the time I searched for the survey in its entirety but could only find references to it. When one of my commentators asked me if I knew where she could lay hands on the survey I started searching again, without much success. And then I stumbled across a link to Happily Childfree and amazingly, there was the Ann Landers survey!

It makes such interesting reading that I thought I would reference it again and share it with you here.

As has been noted – YES, it was done in the 70’s. BUT, many of the observations made by parents who wrote to Ann are, in my opinion, just as relevant today. In fact, today it seems even more difficult than ever to be a parent. And, as HCF points out, this was not a scientific survey. It didn’t need to be.

The point it makes is very simple.

Many people do not enjoy parenthood but they will only admit it under the cover of anonymity.

The fact that such a huge number felt they would not have children if they had to do it again (a shocking 70%) may boggle the mind at first, but when I think of it, I (and I would guess many childfree people) probably shouldn’t be that surprised. Or should we? Some of the reasons the respondents gave were the very reasons that I decided I didn’t want to have children. Still, 70%!! Ann admitted that the number shocked even her. And she thought she’d seen and heard everything.

No, what is more shocking (even today) is the fact that the dirty little secret is covered up, complete with a conspiracy of silence by parents, while women are continually advised that they need to have children in order to be “real women” derided if they decide not to, and badgered into believing that parenthood is, or should be, their ultimate wonderful goal and that without children they aren’t really a “family”. For some, I don’t doubt parenthood is wonderful. But for everyone? Clearly it is not.
As Ann mentioned in her article and I quote:

If it is true that a large percentage of the parents in this country are sorry they had children, why don’t we hear more from them? Because such an admission goes against the grain of what we have been taught is human nature. Parents are supposed to love their children no matter what. To speak disparagingly of one’s offspring is socially hazardous.

Trouble with a husband, on the other hand, is a common topic over teacups, luncheon tables, bridge hands and telephones. By the same token, a battle with the little woman is discussed candidly at bars and clubs—wherever men meet. Plain talk about marital problems is a national sport, because everyone knows no marriage is perfect. But parents who have trouble with their children are inclined to keep their mouths shut—unless their troubles have been in the newspapers, or the parents happen to be in the company of other parents who they know are having trouble with their children”.

I hope you enjoy reading the survey as much as I did. Thanks to Happily Childfree (who has a great site by the way and is listed in my Blogroll) for posting the survey.

Old Joke, New Names…

13 10 2006

Had to share this one with you…

President Bush gets out of his helicopter
in front of the White House carrying a baby
pig under each arm.

The Marine guard snaps to attention,
salutes, and says: “Nice pigs, sir.”

Bush replies: “These are not pigs, these
are Texan Razorback Hogs. I got one for
Secretary of State Rice, and I got one
for Defence Secretary Rumsfeld.”

The Marine again snaps to attention,
salutes, and says, “Nice trade, sir.”
